Blue Bear and its Partners - MoD Grand Challenge Winning Team

In 2006 the UK MoD announced a competition to spur technology that would help UK troops detect threats in urban environments. Unmanned systems were to be deployed from a forward operating base to search for threats in a designated urban area with as much autonomy as possible.

Blue Bear and partners were declared the overall winners from an original 14 entries.

Blue Bear developed two sophisticated UAV systems carrying an array of sensors as part of an integrated threat detection solution.

  • A High Level UAV (HLUAV), tasked to fly high above the search area and identify potential threats.
  • A Low Level" BMAV (BBSR Mini Air Vehicle) tasked to fly low over urban rooftops to verify perceived threats.

Blue Bear and partners have received several MoD contracts to further develop the system.
Blue Bear partnered with a range of organisations for the competition.
